By capturing the pawn on e5, White creates an immediate threat against the e8 and prepares to capture the unprotected h8 if Black does not respond accurately. The engine-preferred continuation follows the line Qxe5+ Qe7 Qxh8 Qf7 Qe5+ Be7, where White emerges with a decisive material advantage of a full rook for a pawn.

Black's defensive requirements

Black is forced to address the check on the e8 immediately. While Qe7 is the standard response to block the check, it fails to prevent the loss of the h8.
