Why this is the only good move: White’s d8 is deep in your territory, forcing an immediate capture. Taking with the e7 is essential because it preserves your castling rights and keeps your e8 safe. By using the Bishop, you develop a piece toward the center while preparing to challenge White's upcoming pressure on the e5 pawn.

Why Other Moves Fail

The traps: While Kxd8 also wins the Queen, it is a strategic error. In the resulting sequence, White will play Nxe5, and your King will be stuck on d8, blocking your own pieces and becoming a target for White's minor pieces. Keeping the King on e8 allows for future safety behind your pawns.

How To Find The Only Good Move

Step 1 — Recognize the critical moment: White has forced a capture. You must decide which piece is the "least valuable" defender to move.

Step 2 — Eliminate the traps: Ask yourself: "If I take with the King, can I ever castle?" The answer is no. Since the e7 was already developed, using it to capture doesn't lose any additional time.
