Kxf7! — The Only Good Move!

Why this is the only good move: White has played a premature "Fried Liver" style attack, but the f7 is completely undefended. By playing Kxf7, you simply remove the attacking piece and gain a massive material advantage of +3. The threat to your e8 is neutralized immediately, and White has no follow-up checks to punish your king's position.

Why Other Moves Fail

The traps: Stepping away with Kd7 is a "ghost-scared" move. It treats the check as a deadly threat when it is actually a gift. If you don't take the piece, White simply develops their center while your d7 blocks your own pieces and remains a target for the rest of the game.

How To Find The Only Good Move

Step 1 — Recognize the gift: Whenever a piece checks your King, your first calculation must be: "Can I safely take it?" Here, the f7 has no defenders.

Step 2 — Eliminate the fear of the center: Don't be afraid of losing castling rights if the reward is a full piece. White has no way to quickly bring the d1 or f3 into the attack to checkmate you.

Step 3 — Verify the solution: After you capture, White will try to strike the center: Kxf7 d4 cxd4 c3 Nxe4. You remain a piece up and actually counter-attack the e4 pawn!
